Description

History & Origin: Prickly Pear refers to members of the genus Opuntia, native to the Americas and especially diverse in Mexico. These hardy cacti have long been valued as ornamental plants and are characteristic of dry landscapes.

Care & Maintenance Guide:

  • Sun / Lighting: Provide full sun with several hours of direct light daily. Outdoor placement in a bright, open position encourages compact growth and strong coloration.
  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings. Water deeply during warm active growth and keep almost dry through cool winter conditions. Wrinkled pads can indicate drought, while soft or discolored pads often indicate excess moisture.
  • Soil Type: Choose a coarse, sharply draining cactus soil containing mineral grit, pumice, perlite, or coarse sand. A neutral to slightly acidic or alkaline pH is generally tolerated.
  • Nutrients & Fertilization: Feed with a diluted cactus fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer. Avoid high-nitrogen feeding and stop fertilization during winter.
